Job Seeker Resources

<<< Back

Job Seeker ResourcesMore than one-quarter of New Jersey residents are ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) Despite working hard, these neighbors struggle to afford necessities like child care, health care, shelter, transportation, and food. 51% of jobs in the state pay $20 or less, which is too little to support these basic needs for a family.

The United Way Financial Independence Initiative helps by making resources and training available to job seekers in northern New Jersey, providing them with needed tools to improve their prospects to secure family-sustaining employment.

Free Career Coaching

Throughout the year, United Way provides opportunities for job seekers to meet with career coaches for one-on-one meetings. Participants find expert assistance in their job search, receiving assessments, tips, and tools across a variety of related topics to advance their career and improve their income. Job seekers can find help with:

  • In-depth career skills assessment
  • Tools for branding themselves to meet market needs
  • Help updating their résumé and cover letter
  • Career networking tips
  • Techniques to ace upcoming job interviews
  • Strategies for résumé distribution
  • Counseling on alternative career paths
  • Advice on dressing for success
  • Help setting and achieving short- and long-term career goals

Free Computer Training

To help residents improve their skills and open a wider range of employment opportunities to them, United Way periodically offers free computer training workshops for the Microsoft Office Suite.
